A Brief History

The first police departments in the United States were formed in 1845 in New York City.

Police forces in the United States are at various levels of government such as federal, state, municipal and county. Therefore, there are thousands of police agencies in the United States.

Many of us are familiar with a lot of the police agencies in the United States. Many of the US police agencies have become popularized by television shows. Familiar US police agency names are Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Secret Service, Marshals Service, Department of Homeland Security, and United States Coast Guard just to name a few.
