British Police History
British Police
A Brief History
Policing started in the City of London in 1663 with what was then known as watchmen. This method of policing in London remained until the late 18th century.
In 1829, the London Metropolitan Police force was established by Sir Robert Peel. The London Metropolitan Police force is known and credited as the first modern day police force in the world. The police system and forces of numerous countries such as the United States and Canada are based upon the British model of policing.
It is well known that unlike most other police forces worldwide, the average patrol officer in a British (United Kingdom) police force does not carry a firearm. The standard tool that the officers carry is a baton and a spray (such as a gas or an irritant). However, every police force has members trained in the use of firearms and has a firearms unit.
